Tidal Basin Cherry Blossom Photography Session

An engagement session at the Cherry Blossom during peak bloom (March-April) is an iconic way to document your love. Your photos are sure to impress with the historic location, featuring the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument in the background.

Tree Removal Update (as of June 2024)

The National Park Service (NPS) is removing about 160 cherry trees from the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park in Washington, DC. This is part of a $113 million seawall renovation project to safeguard against rising sea levels and reinforce the seawall from further settling. Originally built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the seawalls have settled up to five feet, posing safety risks to visitors and threatening the historic setting, including the iconic cherry trees. The project, set for completion by 2027, includes repurposing most of the removed trees into mulch to protect the roots of replacement trees. Learn more here.

What does this mean for us? Well, it looks like photography sessions with the cherry blossom trees around the tidal basin are a no-go for the foreseeable future. The good news is is that there are plenty of other cherry blossom trees in the DC area, as well as magnolia trees and lush gardens. With the construction going on, I’ll likely be recommending the Washington National Cathedral or one of the Smithsonian museums instead.

Preparing for your Engagement Session

Preparing for a sunrise engagement session at the Tidal Basin requires careful planning to ensure a seamless experience for all of us. Having the session at sunrise helps to avoid the crowds (trust me, this is the best option during peak bloom). Consider bringing layers to stay warm during the cooler morning temperatures, as well as an extra pair of shoes (it may be muddy in certain areas).

You Guessed It – A Photography Permit is Required

Since the Tidal Basin is operated and managed by the NPS, a photography permit is required. By booking me as your photographer, I will take care of all of the necessary paperwork. You can learn more about the fees and requirements here.
