When to Schedule Your Outdoor Family Photoshoot

Greetings to all the wonderful families in Northern Virginia! Choosing the right time for your outdoor family photoshoot is key to capturing the beauty of each season. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Spring Delight (April – June): The lush greens return! Everything seems to bloom all at once in April. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you might want to avoid scheduling your photos in the month of April. May and June tend to be better months for allergy sufferers.
  • Summer Glow (July – August): Bask in the warmth of summer, where long days provide ample sunlight and a long golden hour. Keep in mind that July and August are humid in Northern Virginia, but it tends to come and go.
  • Autumn Splendor (September – November): Experience the magic of fall foliage, with warm tones and crisp air adding a touch of coziness to your family portraits. Halloween weekend tends to be the best weekend for peak fall foliage.
  • Winter Wonderland (December – February): If you love the charm of winter, capture it with cozy outfits, or consider an in-home session to stay out of the cold.

As a matter of fact, there are an abundance of locations right here in Northern Virginia. Some of my favorite locations, regardless of the time of year, include: Morven Park, Manassas Battlefield, and Frying Pan Farm Park.

How to Prepare for Your Session

Preparing for your family photoshoot can turn the experience into a joyful adventure. Here are some tips to make the most of your session:

Inspiration and outfit guide featuring earth tones and a neutral color palette.

  • Curating Outfits: I will recommend a style and color palette that complements the season and each family member. Subtle patterns and textures add visual interest without being distracting, and it is best to stick with neutrals and earth tones.
  • Communication is Key: Ahead of your session, I will share tips and tricks to ensure you feel prepared. I will ask about what makes your littles excited so I can bring up their favorite topics and earn their trust and interest to capture their best selves.
  • Be Inspired: I encourage you to look at Pinterest and find family photos that you love. Its great to share these images with me ahead of time so that I can understand what type of imagery you cherish most (up close, far away, movement based, or more posed). Either way, your final gallery will have a ton of variety for you to choose from.
  • Relax and Have Fun: I will give prompts and guidance every step of the way. Embrace the candid moments that showcase your family’s unique dynamic. In addition, I will look for signs of restlessness and offer age-appropriate games such as red light, green light to reengage or redirect.

After Your Outdoor Family Photography Session

Once your outdoor family photoshoot is complete, the excitement continues with what comes next:

  • Photo Selection: After the session, you’ll receive a curated selection of images via an online gallery. Take your time to review and select your favorite moments.
  • Print and Display: Turn your selected photos into tangible memories. You can download and print anywhere, or opt to purchase prints and other fine art products directly from your gallery.
  • Share and Celebrate: Share the joy with friends and family by creating holiday cards or updating your social media profiles. With each outdoor family photo session, you receive personal use and printing rights.
  • Plan for the Future: Consider scheduling outdoor family photoshoots once per year. It’s a wonderful way to create a visual timeline of your journey together.
