Hi, friends!! A new blog post from me means another chance for SEO keyword research to help my dream couples find me. Whether you need couples portraits, a proposal shoot, or a wedding photographer, I’d love to work with you. My promise is to offer exceptional photography for all couples.

Planning a Washington DC Photoshoot

I first met P + A on a train heading home to Washington DC from NYC (waiting in line for the snack cart) and the rest is history. We couldn’t wait to get started on planning for their couples photoshoot. A few months back, I had come across Bens Chili Bowl in Washington DC and earmarked the location, thinking it was the perfect spot for a 35mm film and nostalgia-inspired couples session. I knew it was the perfect place for us to start our day together! Because I was planning on shooting film, I wanted to make sure we had the best lighting available, which is why we choose an early morning session time.

What cameras did I bring to this Gay Couple Photoshoot?

Knowing I wanted ultra timeless photographs of P + A, I brought along 2 of my favorite film cameras. The photos below were either from my Minolta SRT 101 (the color film) an the black and white images were captured on my Canon EOS 1V. All of the photos you see below are 35mm film and I could not be happier with how they turned out! Shout out to The Find Lab for the always perfect developing and scanning.

Why I love these two film cameras for portrait photography

  • For Nostalgia: If you’re interested in a classic, purely mechanical experience with a focus on manual skills, the Minolta SRT 101 is a great choice. It’s ideal for those who enjoy the process of manual photography and have an appreciation for vintage cameras.
  • For Modern Features and Versatility: The Canon EOS-1V is better suited if you want more advanced features like autofocus, continuous shooting, and durability. It’s a workhorse for professionals and those who appreciate having the benefits of modern technology in a film camera.

Both cameras have their unique charms and strengths. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize the simplicity and classic nature of the Minolta SRT 101 or the advanced features and robustness of the Canon EOS-1V.

The soft light and vibrant scenery created a perfect backdrop for their photos. P + A were relaxed and joyful, which made the session enjoyable. Their chemistry and genuine affection were evident in every shot. We explored several locations around this DC neighborhood, each adding a unique touch to their story. The final images beautifully showcased their love and connection. It was a memorable experience, and I’m thrilled with how their photos turned out.

What to Wear for your Gay Couple Photoshoot

It’s important to aim for a look that complements both your style and the setting of the photoshoot. Here are some tips to help you decide:

  1. Coordinate, Don’t Match: Instead of wearing identical outfits, coordinate your clothing. Choose colors and patterns that complement each other without being too similar. For example, if one person is wearing a large pattern, the other might wear smaller pattern or a solid color that picks up one of the colors from the pattern.
  2. Consider the Setting: Think about where the photoshoot will take place. For outdoor shoots, softer, natural colors and layers often work well. For urban settings, you might opt for more structured or trendy outfits. Match your attire to the environment to enhance the overall look of the photos.
  3. Stick to Classic Styles: Classic and timeless outfits usually look best in photos. Avoid overly trendy pieces that might date the photos or distract from the main focus: you as a couple.
  4. Balance: If one person wears a bold color or a pattern, the other might opt for more neutral or subdued tones. This helps keep the focus on the couple rather than on any one outfit.
  5. Comfort is Key: Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. If you’re at ease, it will show in the photos.
  6. Accessorize Thoughtfully: Accessories can enhance your outfits, but be careful not to overdo it. Simple, complementary accessories often work best. Bright summer day? Then bring sunglasses! You can wear them for photos, simply hold them, and tuck them away for other shots.
